Support African Women in Science (AWIS)
Your gift to build the AWIS program will:
- Connect early-career scientists with mentors in their chosen field.
- Build these scientists’ professional capacity through expert training in leadership; media relations; writing for science, policy, and public outreach; and meeting facilitation.
- Cultivate a community of peer support to reduce isolation and attrition.
- Support participants in presenting their work at international conferences and integrating into the larger scientific community.
- Grow networks to strengthen freshwater research and policy.
- Directly benefit 18 scientists in this first cohort and each subsequent group of women.
- Strengthen scientific collaboration around 25% of the global freshwater supply.
- Help cover internet connection costs and tech support for an AWIS participant.
- Pay for a scientist to take part in the International Association of Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) Conference
Help AWIS Make Waves
The Annual Meeting is where each new AWIS cohort begins: the first time participants meet one another, connect with ACARE’s Advisory Groups, and— for some—attend an international professional meeting for the first time.
But funding cuts across scientific communities are making it harder for ACARE to cover the travel and visa costs that make this experience possible.
That’s why we’re launching the AWIS Making Waves campaign. Our goal is to help the 2027 AWIS cohort travel to the Annual Meeting in Lilongwe, Malawi, and continue building the skills, connections and leadership they bring to their work across the African Great Lakes.
The AWIS network is already making an impact, with alumnae taking on leadership roles in Advisory Groups, committees and research institutes. Now we’re asking you to help the next cohort make their waves.
